Diphtheria (phase ii)
Multimedia Installation (Ceramic objects, Sound, Devices and Wire)
2023

This works was response to the uprising in Iran in 2022. The sound of recent protests in Iran’s streets as well as the mother’s and sisters mourning for those who have been killed juxtapose with the voice of women singing lullabies have been collected and archived through this work. Diphtheria phase ii builds on the previous installation which was a metaphor for the forbidden voices of Middle Eastern women and their struggle to be heard. Like diphtheria, which spreads through the air and through direct social/political contact, efforts to limit free speech begin to take hold from within. The newest iteration is a visual and auditory experience of the intensifying struggles of Iranians and a soundscape of their current social and political milieu. It serves as a document and testament of what was, what is and augurs the possibility of what the future may be.
