Celebrating the Refugee and Immigrant Community through Clay, Music and Community
In Collaboration with Nashville International Center of Empowerment (NICE) and Global Education Center
With Kind Support of Tennessee Art Commission and Vanderbilt Community Relation
The Resonance of the Lands is a project in Nashville, Tennessee, a hub for diverse immigrant communities. Local clay was mapped, refined, and crafted into 25 instruments inspired by Middle Eastern and North African drums. Through workshops, immigrants and refugees connected with the land, creating and playing these instruments to reflect their experiences and heritage. This initiative fostered community, healing, and celebrated Nashville's multicultural soundscape, enriching the city with the voices of its many inhabitants.
Ceramic Drums and Darbukas (By Raheleh and Reza Filsoofi and the contribution of local artists and community members)
Process: This includes collecting soil from the Vanderbilt Campus and various locations around Nashville, TN, isolating the clay, and exploring different methods of ceramic production (potters wheel and clay 3D printer) used in the creation of ceramic drums and darbukas. The process included the skinning and of these instruments to enhance their aesthetic and functional qualities.
